Charles CAMOIN (1879-1965) Saint-Tropez, Little Africa with big pines Oil on canvas Signed lower left 65 x 81 cm Provenance Galerie Robert Schneider, Paris Duvivier Collection, Paris Sale Ader-Tajan, Paris, June 27, 1994, cat. no. 38, repr. p. 31 Private collection, France The authenticity of this painting has been confirmed by Madame Anne-Marie Grammont-Camoin, and it will be included in the catalog raisonné of Charles Camoin currently being prepared by the Camoin Archives. "As a colorist, I have always been and still am a fauve on the loose" - C. Camoin. A painter revealed by the fauve movement, Charles Camoin used color to retranscribe the motif and its luminous variations. He left his Montmartre studio in 1921 and settled permanently in Saint-Tropez, demonstrating his affection for this region, which he painted and overpainted almost obsessively, in a spontaneous, richly colored style.
